It Started Over a Meal

Our Story

Foodies Day Out didn’t begin with a business plan. It began, quite simply, with a group of friends around a table. We were friends who loved food – but perhaps even more, we loved everything that happened around food.

Long evenings at our favourite local eateries. Debates about who made the best version of a particular Madurai dish. Stories about places that had been serving the city for generations. Discovering a tiny shop tucked away in a street we had passed a hundred times. And, inevitably, planning our next meal before the one in front of us was even over. Travel was another passion we shared.

Whenever we travelled, we found ourselves looking beyond the usual sights. We wanted to know where the locals ate, the stories behind a neighbourhood, the little traditions that never made it into guidebooks, and the people who made a place what it was. The best memories from our travels were rarely just about what we saw. They were about what we experienced – and the people and stories we discovered along the way.

Then, one evening in Madurai, over yet another meal and another long conversation, someone asked a simple question:
“Why don’t we share this with people travelling to our city?”

That question stayed with us.
We knew a Madurai very different from the one most visitors experienced. A city of bustling streets and late-night eateries, legendary dishes and little-known favourites, family recipes, colourful characters and countless stories waiting to be told over a plate of food. So we decided to invite travellers along. Not as tour guides. But as locals sharing the city we love.

That simple idea became Foodies Day Out, launched under The Hungry Traveller, and went on to become one of India’s early food-tour experiences. What began as friends taking travellers to their favourite places to eat soon became something much bigger. We met people from across the world, shared tables and stories, exchanged travel experiences and watched strangers discover Madurai through its food. And somewhere along the way, we realised that Foodies Day Out was never really just about food.

It was about connection. Connecting travellers with a city. Connecting food with the stories behind it. Connecting people from different parts of the world around a table. Years later, that is still what excites us. We are still travelling. Still discovering. Still hunting for interesting food and stories. Still arguing about where to eat next.

And whenever someone visits Madurai, we still feel the same way we did that evening when this journey began:
Come hang out with us. There’s a side of Madurai we’d love to show you.
